Rename an entity without breaking everything
Home Assistant renames the entity. It does not rename the forty places you typed it. This does.

Do this in the right order
- Rename it in Home Assistant first — Settings → Devices & Services → Entities. Note the exact new ID.
- Then run your config through here and check the list of changes below the output.
- Paste it back and restart.
Doing it the other way round leaves you with a config pointing at an entity that does not exist yet, which is the same broken state you were trying to avoid — just earlier.
Questions people ask
Why does renaming break automations?
Because the automation stores the entity ID as text. Change the entity and the automation keeps pointing at a name that no longer exists — and fails silently, which is the worst way to fail.
Does it touch entities inside templates?
Yes, and that is the point. References buried in {{ states('sensor.old') }} are exactly the ones people miss when doing it by hand.
Will it rename things it should not?
It matches whole entity IDs only, so sensor.temp will not match sensor.temp_outside. Every change is listed with its line number so you can check before pasting anything back.
